Renten Okazaki Biography
Renten Okazaki was born on March 21, 1954, in Hiroshima Prefecture. He graduated from the Economics Department of Rikkyo University at the age of 21. In the same year, he began his career as a guitarist, performing on stage and in recording studios, collaborating with many famous Japanese singers of the 1980s.
He was the first fingerstyle guitarist in Japan to sign a contract with a major record label, making significant contributions to the development of fingerstyle music in Japan. He was a close peer to renowned Asian fingerstyle musicians such as Sato Nakaoka and Toshihiro Komatsubara, and Kotaro Oshio is considered his disciple.
Starting his career at the age of 21, Okazaki became active in major venues and recording studios in Japan, collaborating with prominent artists such as Ryoko Moriyama, Yutaka Ozaki, Jiro Sugita, and Yasuhiko Suzuki, all of whom represented the music of the 70s and 80s. Through these collaborations, he gradually established himself as a respected folk musician.
In 1980, Okazaki officially entered the field of fingerstyle guitar and began composing, gradually developing his own unique playing style.
In 1987, he started performing solo fingerstyle concerts across the country. Okazaki’s musical activities made significant contributions to the growth of Japanese fingerstyle music in the 1980s and 1990s. In the same year, he founded the guitar school “Acoustic Avenue,” where he taught many guitar enthusiasts, including the famous Asian fingerstyle artist Kotaro Oshio.
In 1990, he released his first album entirely composed of fingerstyle guitar music, Bayside Resort. The success of this album made him the first fingerstyle guitarist in Japan to sign a contract with a major record label. As a result, his music was used in television dramas, films, and commercials, marking the formal recognition of fingerstyle music in mainstream media.
In 2007, he began hosting the radio program Okazaki Renten Acoustic Wind, broadcast on 12 radio stations across Japan, centered around Tokyo Central FM. The program introduced guitar techniques and musical knowledge to a broad audience. Its videos were also uploaded on websites worldwide, helping to promote Okazaki’s music internationally. In recent years, he has held successful performances in Korea and China, earning praise and acclaim from audiences.
In 2011, Okazaki signed a collaboration deal with Morris Guitars, releasing his own signature guitar model, the Morris M-177ry. He also began serving as a chief judge for the National Fingerstyle Guitar Competition in Japan.
